Your NDIS Plan Review: How to Walk In Prepared and Walk Out Confident

4 min read

A plan review or reassessment is one of the most important events in your NDIS journey. It is the moment when your current supports are evaluated, your goals are revisited, and your funding for the next period is determined. For many participants, the lead-up to a review can feel stressful, particularly if they are unsure whether their plan has been working effectively or if they are worried about funding being reduced. However, with the right preparation, a plan review can be a powerful opportunity to advocate for your needs and ensure your next plan is even more aligned with your life.

The most important thing you can bring to a plan review is evidence. The NDIA wants to understand how your current supports have contributed to your goals, what has worked well, and what has not [1]. This means gathering documentation from your support team: progress notes from therapists, reports from your Support Coordinator, and any assessments that reflect your current level of need. If you have been working toward a specific goal, such as improving mobility or increasing community participation, concrete examples of your progress are far more compelling than general statements.

Understanding your spending history is equally critical. If you have consistently underspent in a particular category, the NDIA may interpret this as evidence that you need less funding in that area. Conversely, if you have exhausted your budget early, you can use this data to demonstrate that your current allocation is insufficient [2]. This is why maintaining a clear, up-to-date picture of your budget throughout the year is so valuable. When you walk into a review with a detailed, organised record of your spending, including which supports were most beneficial and why, you are presenting a compelling, evidence-based case for your needs.

It is also important to reflect on your goals before the review. The NDIS is a goals-based scheme, meaning your funding is tied to the outcomes you are working toward. If your circumstances have changed (perhaps your disability has progressed, you have moved to a new area, or you have new aspirations for your independence or employment), these changes should be clearly articulated [1]. Do not wait for the review to raise these issues; document them as they occur throughout the year so you have a clear narrative to present.

Preparation ItemWhy It Matters
Progress reports from therapistsDemonstrates the impact of funded supports on your goals.
Support Coordinator’s summaryProvides a professional overview of your service landscape.
Budget spending historyShows whether your current funding is adequate or insufficient.
List of changed circumstancesEnsures your new plan reflects your current reality.
Updated goalsKeeps your plan aligned with where you want to go next.
Support person or advocateProvides emotional support and ensures your voice is heard.

Finally, remember that you do not have to navigate a plan review alone. You have the right to bring a support person, a family member, or an advocate to your review meeting [3]. Your Support Coordinator can also play a vital role in preparing evidence and accompanying you to the meeting. The more organised and informed you are, the more confident you will feel. When you have real-time clarity on your plan’s health throughout the year, knowing your burn rates, identifying gaps, and generating review-ready summaries at a moment’s notice, the review process transforms from a source of anxiety into a structured, productive conversation about your future.
